Our Response: Caring for Multiple Patients
Which outcome competencies are problems in this incident?
- 7th competency, competent care provider: the patient's care is in question. (Breakfast before insulin.)
- 9th competency, responsible care manager: Student Michaela could have and should have delegated some things to the patient care assistant. Her priority setting is in question.
What do you think of the preceptor's actions?
- The main question is, where is the preceptor? Sadiq should be more involved with the student and her actions.
What do you think of Michaela's response?
Michaela is reverting to the role of unlicensed assistive personnel rather than concentrating on the registered nurse role. She may have a job in the role or may be nervous with her new responsibilities. It is very easy for students to revert to what is comfortable rather than taking on new role responsibilities.
