Case Study #1: The Post-operative Patient

What's a Preceptor to do?

Review the course competencies from the syllabus. As you read the description of this patient incident, determine which course competencies are reflected in the incident.

Marcie, a Capstone student, has been assigned a new post-operative patient. The assessment data on the patient includes the following:

  • Elevated heart rate
  • Decreased blood pressure
  • Decreased urine output
  • Increased chest tube output
  • Skin pale, cool, and diaphoretic
  • Denies need for pain medication

Mark, the Capstone preceptor, asked Marcie what she thought about the assessment data and Marcie had difficulty describing what the priority nursing action should be. When Mark talked further to Marcie about the necessity of calling the doctor to request orders for treatment of the abnormal assessment data, Marcie exploded and said,

I just can't think. I'm so tired! I had to work at my other job! You can't expect me to know what to do!!

After considering the facts presented, complete the learning activity below.
