Preceptor-Student First Meeting
The first meeting between you and your Capstone student is a crucial time to get to know each other. We have found if both you and your student understand each other and "where you're coming from," the Capstone practicum will be a more productive learning experience.
The first meeting will be arranged before the student begins Capstone shifts. The faculty or student will contact you to arrange a date/time to meet with your student. The meeting should take place in a meeting area on your unit at a time that is convenient for you.
The student will bring to the meeting:
- A personal calendar
- Learning goals
- Skills inventory
- A personality inventory
- Ideas for evidence-based practice course project
- A Unit Orientation Checklist (to be completed the first day of clinical hours)
Scheduling Clinical Hours
The ideal schedule is for the student to work your hours from the beginning of Capstone in order to complete the practicum as soon as possible, thus leaving extra dates near the end, if they are needed. However there are constraints due to the School of Nursing and your schedule. Here are some issues to consider:
- What happens if your hours change?
- What happens if you become ill?
- What happens if you are floated to another unit for your shift?
- What happens if your shift is canceled?
At the first meeting, the preceptor, student, and clinical faculty will discuss plans to address potential scheduling issues and exchange contact information to communicate any schedule changes.
