Our Response: Feedback Guidelines
Here are our guidelines for effective feedback. How did yours match up to ours?
- Be specific, not general, in your comments
- Be descriptive about what would improve the student's performance
- Focus on modifiable behaviors, not on personality quirks
- Give the feedback as soon as possible after the performance
- Give feedback in a private place
- Give both positive and negative feedback
- Give feedback every time you work with the student
- Ensure that the student has heard and understood the feedback
Try to think of recent feedback you have given and if you didn't follow the guidelines above, think through how you could have altered the feedback to be more effective.
