Capstone

In Capstone, taken during the final semester, students are paired one-on-one with an experienced nurse and performs in a progressively independent manner in a patient care environment. Faculty work with the student and the preceptor to ensure a productive learning experience, set goals, and evaluate learning. Capstone is a very important experience for students, because it bridges the transition from learning to practice. Students spend a total of 112 hours on the unit and complete an evidence-based project, based on needs or ideas that arise during the semester. Five groups of future IU School of Nursing complete the program every year: two groups in spring, two in fall, and one in summer semesters.

The old adage "It takes a village" applies well to Capstone. Administrative staff in the Office of Clinical Placements and in other roles in the school work together with our clinical partners, preceptors, and Capstone Co-Coordinators to recruit, train, vet, and match preceptors with students to provide optimal learning experiences and ensure that optimal learning occurs. The Capstone Co-Coordinators work with clinical partners and faculty to develop and execute the most robust Capstone experience possible. Finally, clinical placement staff track data on Capstone placements and preceptors to help guide strategic planning and recognize outstanding preceptors.
